Ayurvedic Diet
Life is God's precious gift to us and it is up to us to make the best of it. Health is the most basic and crucial requirement for a fulfilled life. AYURVEDA emphasizes that if one maintains a lifestyle that is in accordance with ones constitution, recover shortly after the start of an affliction will be more likely. An individual should rise early in the morning before sunrise. Clean habits: Physical and mental purity are pre-requisites for the day's activities. This is achieved through clean habits like brushing the teeth, scraping the tongue, gargling with water which has a pinch of turmeric added to it, bathing, trimming of beard, hair and nails and elimination of body wastes.
About cooking with the weather
Each season brings forth the foods that best serve our needs during that particular time of year. Changes in the weather ask us to shift, adjust and to change. Our bodies are moving within a grater macrocosm, the environment. Often when there is a sudden shift in weather, like an unexpected snowstorm in late spring, the body will manifest signs of adjusting to this change. You might notice sudden congestion, fatigue, headache, or flu- like symptoms. Your Doshas are responding to the shift in balance, seeking health. There is no need to panic. Think back about how you have been eating and living, look at the changes, and adjust yourself accordingly. In the example just given, kapha is predominant: cold wet weather, congestion, heaviness. You can tend to your kapha right now more than you usually would by eating lighter, drier, warm fresh foods.
If a sudden hot dry spell or chilly windy weather arises, one can respond accordingly, with support for ones pitta or vata doshas respectively. These changes in weather are likely to elicit a more pronounced response from the body if they come at the change of seasons, as they often do. As mentioned these whether changes provide us with opportunities for one to create ones own balance again.
To be a more specific: use cooling cilantro, saffron and mint in hot weather. You can use fresh pungent ginger to warm you up in cold weather. When the weather is damp, select more drying foods, like barely, quinoa and amaranth. When it is dry I'll go for more lubricating substances, like ghee or extra oil. What you use will vary with your own tastes and constitution.
